MAGY: Born This Way
The "Survival" Plan
MAGY wasn't purely an accident, but it sure was a surprise. Thắng sói and I (Lựợm) initially just planned to try our hand at making magnetic photos. Besides looking for a little 'survival fund,' it was mostly about sharing the joy of those who've managed to capture priceless moments.
The "DIY" Trap
My first thought? Build a website. Because let's face it, Facebook or Instagram are just social networks with scattered posts, and we wanted our story to be told properly.
And of course, I was going to build the whole thing myself.
Initially, I was going to pick WordPress for an easier life. Just find a theme, install it, and tweak a bit—easy peasy. Based on my experience, I figured I'd be done in about a week.
The "Identity" Crisis
I got halfway through before realizing that what I actually needed wasn't just a basic CMS, but a full-on Digital Asset Management (DAM) system. We didn't want a website where photos are just 'pasted' in. We wanted every single image to have its own 'identity' and 'status.' This has now become the core soul of the project that we'll be obsessed with from here on out.
Consulted my AI assistants, ChatGPT and Gemini, the verdict was Wagtail (thanks to my Django roots). But one of them warned me: 'Welcome to the rabbit hole of an eternal project.'
The Tech Deep-Dive
To keep things efficient, I developed a Lightroom plugin that leverages AI for auto-tagging and descriptions. The goal: flawless searchability and top-tier SEO for every single masterpiece.
Still, I have to admit, wrestling with Wagtail isn't exactly a walk in the park for a photographer. Thanks to AI, though, I’ve managed to keep things moving instead of getting completely stranded.
The "Spark" and The Mansion
Furthermore, as this is an image-showcase website, I am relieved from the burden of intricate layout design or complex structural arrangement. Great photos make a great website—it's just science. Even though I’ve stared at Thắng sói’s landscapes a million times, they still give me the 'spark' I need to keep grinding and squeezing out new features for the site.
Open Doors
So, our little 'startup' selling magnetic photos somehow ended up with a budget that's gone 10x over. Instead of a basic website, we accidentally built a full-blown, bilingual platform for managing and showcasing art.
At this point, MAGY has become a mansion that's way too big for just the two of us. So, we’ve decided to open the doors. We want MAGY to be a creative playground where photographers and visual artists can hang their work, swap stories, and where anyone can easily grab a print for their own home.
